"The goal is to improve quality of life—not just to treat the disease, but to treat the whole person."
— The Philosophy of Palliative Care

What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness. It focuses on relieving symptoms, pain, and stress—so patients and families can live as fully as possible throughout the illness journey. The goal is to improve quality of life at every stage of a serious condition, not just to treat the disease itself. Palliative care can begin at diagnosis and continue alongside curative or life‑prolonging treatments, at any age and in any setting.
How Palliative Care Works
Palliative care is delivered by a specially trained team of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other specialists. They work together with your existing doctors to provide an extra layer of support tailored to your needs—not your prognosis. This team‑based approach addresses physical suffering as well as emotional, social, and spiritual concerns, ensuring coordinated, compassionate care for you and your family.
Seamless Collaboration
Palliative care teams do not replace your existing doctors; they work alongside you, your family, and your other clinicians to provide an extra layer of support. They communicate closely with all providers to keep everyone "on the same page," coordinate symptom management, and support you at every step—whether you are at home, in a hospital, or in a nursing or hospice facility.
Why Quality of Life Matters
Palliative care teams focus deeply on quality of life. They help people living with serious illnesses—such as cancer, heart failure, COPD, kidney disease, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, and many others, manage symptoms like pain, breathlessness, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, anxiety, depression, and sleep difficulties. By relieving these burdens, patients often find renewed strength to carry on with daily life, and several studies have shown that some patients may even live longer when palliative care is part of their treatment plan.
Recognizing the Whole Person
Palliative care addresses not just physical illness, but also the emotional, social, and spiritual challenges faced by patients and their families. It focuses on relieving suffering through early symptom management, along with emotional support, practical care, and bereavement assistance.
Globally, around 56.8 million people need palliative care each year, but only about 14% receive it—highlighting a growing gap as populations age and chronic illnesses increase.
Matching Treatment to Your Goals
A key role of the palliative care team is to help you align treatment choices with your personal values and goals. They take the time to understand what matters most to you and ensure that all your doctors are informed and aligned with your wishes. This gives you greater control over your care, reduces confusion, and helps prevent unnecessary or unwanted interventions—leading to a calmer, more confident experience for you and your family.
Palliative Care vs. Hospice
Palliative care can begin at any time after diagnosis and can run alongside treatments aimed at curing or controlling disease. Hospice care, by contrast, is a type of palliative care focused specifically on the end of life, when curative treatment is no longer the primary goal. At Nemmadi and similar centres, palliative care is designed to improve life at every stage of a serious illness, not just in the final days.

At Nemmadi Centre for Palliative Care, this philosophy shapes every decision: to treat not only the illness, but the whole person, with compassion, dignity, and relentless respect.
1
Palliative care improves the quality of life for patients and families facing life-threatening illness by addressing not only physical symptoms, but also psychological, social, and spiritual challenges. It takes a holistic approach to care, ensuring comfort, dignity, and emotional well-being throughout the journey.
2
When introduced early, palliative care can reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and the need for intensive medical interventions. By focusing on timely symptom management and supportive care, it helps patients remain more comfortable in familiar and supportive environments.
3
It supports a wide range of conditions, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory illness, kidney failure, neurological disorders, and dementia. This care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team, doctors, nurses, support staff, pharmacists, physiotherapists, chaplains, volunteers, and others, working together to meet the diverse needs of patients and their families.
Practical Impact of Palliative Care
"Every life deserves care. Every family deserves support. Every person deserves dignity."

Support Nemmadi

Support Nemmadi
Sukruthi Trust has built the Nemmadi Centre for Palliative Care at Nelamangala, Bengaluru, a joint initiative between Rotary Bangalore Midtown and Sukruthi Charitable Trust, with support from generous philanthropists.
This centre has been created with a single heartfelt purpose: to care for very poor and terminally ill patients who have nowhere else to turn and cannot afford proper care in the final stages of life. It is a completely charity-based initiative, with no billing counter at the centre.
Thanks to the kindness of donors like you, we have completed the building, which can accommodate 55 beds. We are now looking for support to complete the remaining work and procure the essential medical and other equipment required to make the centre operational at the earliest.
Your support can bring comfort, dignity, and relief to patients who are enduring pain and distress in their most vulnerable moments. Even a small contribution or a valuable lead from your side can help us move closer to beginning this much-needed service.
We sincerely hope to make a small difference in the lives of those who need it most. Your help is urgently needed and deeply appreciated.
